Best Schengen Road Trip Routes for UK Drivers

8 min read

Dreaming of a European road trip but unsure where to start behind the wheel? As a UK driver, you've got a brilliant opportunity to explore some of Europe's most stunning landscapes in just two weeks—and without the hassle of navigating airports or train schedules. This guide walks you through the best Schengen road routes tailored specifically for British drivers, complete with practical tips to make your adventure smooth and memorable.

The Classic Five-Country Loop: Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland & France

This route is the sweet spot for a 2-week Schengen road trip. It's manageable in distance, hits cultural highlights, and gives you genuine variety without exhausting yourself behind the wheel.

Week One: Belgium & Luxembourg to the Rhine Valley

Start by taking Eurotunnel from Folkestone to Calais (roughly 35 minutes) or a ferry from Dover. Head straight to Belgium and spend 2-3 days in Bruges and Brussels—cobbled streets, medieval architecture, and exceptional Belgian beer are well worth the detour. From Brussels, it's just a 90-minute drive to Luxembourg City, a stunning hilltop capital that most UK tourists miss entirely. Push on into Germany's Rhineland, where you'll follow the Rhine Valley south. Stay around Koblenz or Bingen for 2-3 nights; the riverside towns are picturesque, wine is excellent, and the driving is genuinely scenic.

Week Two: Switzerland & Eastern France

Cross into Switzerland via the Rhine and head to Interlaken or Lucerne—expect dramatic Alpine scenery and steep mountain roads (manageable in summer, but plan carefully). A night or two in the Swiss mountains gives you hiking opportunities and jaw-dropping views. From there, loop west into France's Alsace region (Strasbourg and Colmar are charming), then head south to Provence or Lyon depending on your energy. If you've got time, the Provence route adds lavender fields and Roman ruins; Lyon is more urban but a brilliant cultural hub.

Essential Paperwork Before You Drive

Don't get caught out at the border with missing documents. You'll need:

  • Valid UK driving licence – check expiry dates now
  • International Driving Permit (IDP) – whilst many European countries accept UK licences, an IDP costs £5.50 and provides backup proof of your driving right. Collect it from your local Post Office (takes 1 week)
  • Vehicle registration document (V5C) and proof of insurance – third-party minimum is legally required across all Schengen countries
  • GB or UK sticker or number plate identifier on your vehicle
  • GB car insurance documents – bring proof your policy covers continental Europe (most do, but check with your insurer)

From late 2026, you'll also need an ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System)—essentially an electronic travel permit for non-EU citizens. It'll cost around €7 and take 5 minutes to apply online. Set a reminder to sort this once the system launches.

Timing, Driving Rules & Practical Tips

Best time to go: April through May offers the ideal balance—spring weather without peak summer crowds or motorway chaos. Autumn (September-October) is equally good if school holidays allow.

Driving regulations: Speed limits vary by country (typically 50 km/h in towns, 100–130 km/h on motorways). Headlight beam adjusters are required in France and Germany, and you must carry a breathalyser kit in France. Motorway tolls apply in France, Switzerland, and Austria if you venture that far—budget accordingly.

Practical checklist:

  1. Book accommodation 4-6 weeks ahead (spring is busy)
  2. Fill up fuel in Luxembourg or Germany—it's cheaper than Belgium or France
  3. Download offline maps (Google Maps offline or Maps.me)—mobile signal isn't guaranteed in mountains
  4. Budget roughly £400–600 for fuel, tolls, and ferries for two weeks
  5. Don't rush; aim for 3–4 hour daily drives maximum to enjoy stops along the way

A Schengen road trip is one of the best ways to experience Europe as a UK driver. You're free to roam for 90 days out of every 180, so take advantage. Start planning your route now, sort your IDP and insurance, and give yourself permission to take the scenic detours. Europe's waiting.
